Scenario 48 - Blackout with 5 Beers in the Fridge

Updated: May 29, 2021

It's a nice, hot, mid-July day. You're off work and sitting on your apartment balcony drinking a beer when you hear the hum of your window AC unit suddenly stop. It registers with you for a sec but you think nothing of it. Moments later, you start hearing car horns and peek down over your balcony to realize the traffic lights are off too... The power is out. But, you've been scrolling Instagram on your cellphone, so no concern of an EMP.

Now what? It's hot as hell out, your AC doesn't work, streets are completely jammed, what do you do?

You sit on the couch inside to enjoy the cool before your apartment gets really hot. Pissed about the power outage, you first concern is what to do, you're bored. Might as well call the power company to see how long before its fixed. As you walk over to your phone, it starts beeping. You pick up the phone and have a text message.

EMERGENCY ALERT: A STATE OF EMERGENCY HAS BEEN DECLARED. TRAVEL BAN EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. LOCK ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS. REMAIN INDOORS. BOIL ALL WATER USED FOR CONSUMPTION OR FOOD PREPARATION. REMAIN IN PLACE, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CURRENT LOCATION. FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS WILL BE PROVIDED.

What the hell is going on? Panic has set in and to make matters worse, you now see NO SERVICE on your phone. A quick check of your apartment, you find 3/4 case of water, 5 beers and some orange juice. Most of the food is in the fridge but would need to be cooked... but wait, the stove doesn't work. Great, there's a boil warning and no gas. Wishing you had made it to the grocery store this week, you start wondering how you will cook your food and boil your water (which for the moment, still has pressure).

Caveats:

  • Be detailed about the first few things you would do from this point.

  • Your are limited to the information you have from the text message at this point, no power or cell service. How do you gather Intel on what's going on?

  • You can include anything from your actual preps in your response except food and water. That is limited to what's outlined in the scenario.

  • Consider your refrigerated items. Will they go to waste or have you prepped the means to prepare this food sans the gas stove in your kitchen?

What's your move?
